Have you ever considered starting a blog? If so, you’re in the right place.
I’ve gathered all the basics of how to start a blog. Below you’ll find detailed instructions on how to get started setting up a new blog. I’d suggest you ask yourself these 3 questions prior to starting a blog:
- Why do you want to blog?
- What will your blog be about?
- Who will your blog audience be?
Once you’ve spent some time answering these questions you’re ready to get going.
I have written down all the steps below to get you started. Following these 4 easy steps below you can have a blog up and running in about 20 minutes.
I recommend signing up first with Bluehost.com to host your blog. This is where your blog will “live.” There are hundreds of hosting options available for your blog. Ready to get your blog set up? Here are the steps:
Click here to get started with Bluehost.com.
Once you see the image below on your computer click on the “get started now” button.
Choose a Plan
I would suggest to get started by choosing the “Basic” plan. Click Select and you’ll be taken to the page to choose your domain. You’ll also have a 30 day money back guarantee with Bluehost.
Choose a Domain
After choosing your Domain name Bluehost will ask you to choose “Upgrades.” I’d suggest skipping all of these. You should now see “Welcome to Bluehost.” Click on the “Create your password” button to continue.
This will take you to the Bluehost login screen. You may be promoted with another upgrade offer. Ignore this now, you can add on anything later.
Click on the “Hosting” link in the upper left hand corner. This will take you to what’s know as the cPanel or Control Panel.
Bluehost makes this super easy, don’t be intimidated by the number of buttons here.
Scroll down the page to the “Website” section. Click on the “Install WordPress” logo and wait for the new page to load.
A new “WordPress” screen appears. Here you simply click on the “Install” button. This will take you to a new screen. Select the domain you want to install WordPress on. It should default to the correct domain. Click on “Check Domain.”
The next screen is the “Last step, you are almost there” prompt. Click on “Advanced Options.” Type in your site name, you can always change this later. Accept the “Admin Username” and “Admin Password” that Bluehost suggests.
Click on, “I have read the terms and conditions………” Then click on the “Install Now” button. The installation process will begin. Be patient, this will take a few minutes.
Bluehost may off another upgrade, close the pop-up. You should see the progress bar near the top of your screen. Once complete you will receive “Your install is complete” notification.
Next click on the “View Credentials” button. This will take you to the Notification Center. Click on “View.”
You will then get a screen with your Blog URL, Login URL, username and password. Write all this information down and take a screenshot of it. Bluehost will email you this information but make sure you write it down.
Congratulations! You’ve just set up your very own self-hosted Blog site. You’re on your way to Blogging!
Log into WordPress
Click on the “Admin URL” link. This will take you to the WordPress login page. Enter the username and password that you wrote down.
This will take you to the WordPress Dashboard. This is referred to as the WordPress back-end. The front-end is what readers see when they enter your domain name in their URL search bar.
Write Your First Blog Post
On the far lefthand of the screen towards the top you’ll see “Posts.” Click on “Add New” and you’ll be taken to the screen where you write the actual Blog Post. Enter the Title, then click in the empty box to write the Blog content. Once finished with your new Blog Post click on “Save Draft” on the upper right side of the screen. I’d suggest re-reading your Blog Post a couple of times checking for typos and grammar corrections. When you’re happy with the new Post click on the “Publish” button on the right side of the screen.
High Five ……. you did it! You just published your very first Blog Post on your own self-hosted WordPress blog.

Marriage Family Finances is a Bluehost affiliate, which means the company pays commissions via sign up links. This, however, did not influence my recommendation, most all hosting services have similar programs. Bluehost may from time to time change their policies and/or procedures.
